Adding Value

NAIS for Youth

The Idea of Continuous ID fits within the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service's programs.

These programs are called. . .

  • QSA's (Quality Systems Assessment)
  • PVP's (Process Verification Program)

The NAIS strictly focuses on animal disease management rather than transfer of animal management or carcass information between producers and harvest facilities.

Participation

Participation in QSA's and PVP's are avenues for enhancing information transfer and potentially increasing efficiency and value of livestock production.

What are QSA's and PVP's?

Systems for verifying information such as age, source, breed or special management like organic or natural. Verifications may be of additional value to purchasers.

QSA's are generally considered to be company programs where calves must move through a chain of suppliers (producer, feeder, packer and retailer). If any participant is not an approved supplier, the cattle may not qualify for the program.

PVP's are a set of pre-approved requirements that can include genetics, health management, feeding, source, age, etc., that are adhered to and documented by the participant.

Both programs involved some type of training, evaluation and/or audit procedure by the organization that has the program approved by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.

These programs potentially add value to cattle by:

Entering a program
- Saying what you do

Following the program
- Doing what you say

Documenting
- Proving what you do

Reviewing information, evaluating results and improving
