How can NAIS Protect Your Animal?

Learn More About the NAIS

Purpose of the NAIS: To identify animals and track them as they come in contact with animals other than herd mates from their premises or geographic location of origin.

Long term goal of NAIS: To be able to identify all premises and animals that had direct contact with a diseased animal within 48 hours after discovery.

NAIS has three components:
1. Premise Identification
2. Animal Identification
3. Animal Tracking

Premise Identification is the initial step and first component of the NAIS.

A premise is the geographic location where an animal is born, cared for, exhibited, or marketed. Examples include farms. ranches, feed yards, auction barns, fairs and livestock exhibitions

Premise Registration gives animal health authorities the ability to locate diseased and potentially exposed animals in a disease outbreak.

Animal Identification is a standard way to track animals from premise to premise. Animals will be issued a unique AIN, or Animal Identification Number.

This consists of:
--Country Code (3 numbers)
--12 digit animal number
Example: 840 003 123 456 789EID Tags

Animal Tracking helps prevent spread of disease. If an animal has been diagnosed with a disease, the NAIS will allow officials to track the diseased animal and other animals exposed to the disease. In a disease outbreak, the date, event, premise number and animal ID number are made available for animal health officials to:

Find the source of infection and additional exposed animals and find where exposed animals may have been moved and determine additional exposed animals
